As part of the upgrading works being done in St. Lawrence Street, the Birgu Local Council took the initiative to upgrade the central found in this street corner with Triq ic-Centinarju tal-Parocca.

On Thursday 17^th January, 2008, a group from the company Allergan Pharmacy, brought to Malta by World Events of Leeds, U.K. and handled by AGL Alliance Group Ltd of Ta’ Xbiex, were scheduled to do rehabilitation work as community work in the locality of Birgu by painting all the playing equipment of the only playing field in Birgu situated in St.Edward’s Street, near Café Riche. The responsibility of the upkeep of the mentioned playing field was passed to the Birgu Local Council from the Malta Playing Fields Association

The Birgu Local Council has just finished the upgrading and re-embelishment of the staircase leading from Triq l-Antika to Triq il-Mandragg in the area known as il Manderaggio.

The Birgu local Council in the past few weeks did extensive maintenance work to better the facilities of Couvre Porte Gallery so that it will not only serve as an exhibition hall but also as a fully equipped conference hall. It will also serve to host cultural activities bigger than the ones already held there and other special occasions like receptions etc...

In the area of projects financed by the European Union, the Birgu local Council is working hand in hand with Fondazzjoni Temi Zammit, an agency who works and focuses on bringing funds from the European Union. In fact in May 2007, the Birgu Local Council was informed about the approval of the “MedCOAST.net – Mediterranean Co-operation for on- shore accessibility and sustainability themes: Network for managing urban coastal areas”. The total money financed for this project and allotted to the Birgu Local Council is € 52,000. In this project, the Birgu Local Council is one of the 7 members, where one finds three different cities from three different countries, with the City of Agria in Greece being the leader of the project, the City of Sorrento in Italy and the City of Pafos in Cyprus as well as three universities, being, the University of Naples, the University of Thessaly and Fondazzjoni Temi Zammit representing the University of Malta. The Birgu Local Council appointed the Mayor Mr. John Boxall, to be responsible for the administration of this project as well as Ms. Fiorella Scicluna, one of the clerical staff of the Council to be the secretary assisting him in this project.

The Birgu Local Council has just installed new railing at the staircase found in Triq San Duminku after various pleas from the residents.

The HSBC Bank plc, honouring a request done by the Birgu Local Council, today presented the Council with a cheque of 2329.27 euros equivalent to Lm 1000, to sponsor the restoration works recently done at the Melitensia Room at the Birgu Regional Library situated at the authentic Auberge D'Angleterre. The works done included the changing of tiles, new shelving and new doors.

The Birgu Local Council has recently entered into an agreement with "The Three Cities Foundation" to use the Front Office situated at Auberge D'Angleterre in Triq il-Majjistral, Birgu, as their permanent office.

The works done at il-Mandragg area in relation to the MedCOAST.net project.These works included the embelisshment of the area and the wall surrounding it, the re-construction of the deteriorated columns, the installation of a new lighting system and new lanterns and the cleaning of the whole area.

The Birgu Local Council, with the help of the Malta Tourism Authority, has just installed new ornamental railing at the Poste of France, in the area of Couvre Porte. The Council was receiving various complaints regarding how dangerous this area was, when one would go up there to enjoy the panorama.

On Friday 19^th November, 2007, in the City of Pecs in Hungary, the Birgu Local Council was awarded and certified as a city of Quality, hence the name Qualicities, a project part financed by the European Union and which the Council was participating in for the past two years. The Birgu Local Council, with his limitations managed to work and achieve the title of a city of Quality for its City, Citta Vittoriosa.

The Construction of the Public Garden at tal-Hawli area began in November 2006 after long discussions and several problems that the Council had to face for the last six years.

 This Public Garden is financed by the Housing, Construction and Maintenance Department under the direction of Architect Anton Camilleri, who was of great help to the Birgu Local Council to achieve its goals and proposals regarding this capital project

During the second Council meeting 02/05, held on Thursday 26th April, 2007, the members of the Birgu Local Council unanimously agreed on the proposal of the Central Government to re-build the Vittoriosa Clock Tower and the re-embelishment of Misrah ir-Rebha.

The Birgu Local Council has once again, engaged itself in yet another project where workers assigned to the Birgu Local Council are currently doing some maintenance work at the Vittoriosa Regional Library situated at Auberge D'Angleterre in Triq il-Majjistral. Works include the painting of the windows and doors and re-embelishment works of the roof.

Walking in a new city in a new country that you do not know, often offers you the chance to meet new people, get acquainted with new customs and lifestyle, taste new flavours and learn a bit of the country's language.

On Thursday 12th July 2007, 17 members from the CSD company of the Armed Forces of Malta, led by Lieutenant Joseph Degiorgio helped the Local Council in the rehabilitation of the historical heritage of our City by cleaning the fortifications surrounding Couvre Porte.

During the past few years, the Birgu Local Council faced another emerging problem, parking in Citta Vittoriosa. Currently, the Council is in the process of introducing a residential parking scheme for all the residents of Vittoriosa.

Works on the balusters near St. Lawrence Church have just finished, where after the Council's plea to the Restoration unit under the Ministry of Infrastructure, after the dangerous state of these balusters, the Ministry agreed to start all the works needed.

The Birgu Local Council in collaboration with the Environmental Landscape Consortium helped to clean and re-embelish yet another abandoned area in Vittoriosa, the area found in St. Edward Street, corner with Triq Dawret l-Isptar.

New ornamental railing is being installed at tal-Hawli garden to compliment the works of tal-Hawli Garden.

The housing and maintenance department approved the upgrading of the wall in Triq Fuq tal-Hawli and the installation of new ornamental railing.
